Does omega3 change the effectiveness of my birth control pills?

Omega3 is a fatty acid. It comes from the family of poly fatty acids which are unsaturated in nature. This comes in the list of those essential fatty acids which are must for the normal growth of small children and animals. These are important for the nutritious diet of human beings. Omega3 is found in a large amount in fish oil.

Working of omega3 in our body
The essential nutritional acids present in omega3 are ?-linolenic, Docosahexaenoic acid, popularly known as DHA, and Eicosapentaenoic acid known as EPA. Omega3 fatty acids aren’t synthesized by our body, but from the eighteen-carbon omega-3 fatty acid, ?-Linolenic acid they form 20- and 22-carbon unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. This conversion occurs in a competitive form with omega6 fatty acids. These acids are closely related chemical analogues, which are natives of Linoleic acid. Both omega3 and omega6 fatty acids are important for the proper growth of our body. Omega6 analogues competitively slow down the synthesis of omega3 from linolenic acid inside the body. Therefore, the accumulation of Omega3 in tissues tends to be more effective if obtained directly in the form of food or when the amount of omega3 is not greatly i9ncreased by omega6 analogues.

Effectiveness of Omega3 on birth control Pills
The supplements of omega-3 and fish do not have any effect on the efficiency of birth control pills. Some other dietary supplements can effect be effected as omega3 is a nutritious fatty acid and is generally preferred to pregnant women. It is essential for the proper development of human brain during pregnancy. Its deficiency can lead to the incomplete development of child’s immune and nervous system, which can further be a reason for the emotional, immune and learning disorders for lifetime. But it is always suggested that a proper doctor advice should be taken before the intake of any birth control pill, and along with that a proper diet chart should be discussed with the doctor. Diet chart discussion is must because the intake of certain combination of foods with the intake of birth pills can harm the body or also the effectiveness of birth pill.

The intake of omega3 fatty acids can lead to a decrease in the weight of the child and has more chances of premature delivery. This result came out when a comparative study was done between pregnant women taking fish and those with no intake of fish. Due to the fear of weight loss, the amount of fish taken and also the number of women who takes fish during pregnancy has decreased. The decreased fish intake means less amount of Omega3 consumption by the body and it has resulted in more number of children with inadequate birth development.

Sources of Omega3 fatty acid
Some of the major sources of omega3 are fish oil, fish, kiwifruit, Flax, Camelina, Purslane, Chia, Perilla and Lingonberry. Omega3 fatty acids are also found in a large amount in the eggs of chickens that are given a diet of green vegetables and insects. Intake of fish also helps in maintaining a balance between omega3 and omega6 fatty acids.
