Should Heart Patients Add Fish Oil to Their Diets?

Coronary diseases are one of the major causes of non-natural deaths worldwide. Scientists have been long trying to find out the various ways through which this menacing disease can be controlled. One of the most painful aspects of these diseases is that the life of a heart patient is greatly restricted in the terms of physical activities and food habits. Research has been carried out from a long time to come out with some dietary supplements which might reduce the risk of such ailments and help the ones already struggling with them. There seems to be a new ray of hope for the heart patients in the form of fish oil, the elixir of life for them derived from the depths of the vast oceans.

The positive effects of fish oil seem to never ending and their inclusion in the diet can vastly reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest, lower the cholesterol levels in the blood stream and prevent coagulation of the blood in the arteries due to its anti-coagulation effects. It is important for heart patients to include fish oil in their diets for the above said reasons and more. A vast number of fatty fishes contain Omega-3 fatty acids which greatly reduce the viscosity of the blood and un-coagulates the blocked arteries and veins. These fatty acids serve as a key source of heart disease preventable foods when consumed along with the daily diet. By adding fish oil to their diet, heart patients are buying themselves a protective blanket to shelter them from a variety of coronary disease related risks.

But there is a downfall to this, the fatty fishes found in the oceans also happens to contain various pollutants which can be induced naturally or by man’s activities. At times these fishes have been found to contain highly toxic substances like lead, arsenic, mercury and even PCB’s. In the light of such revelation, it would be not advisable to consume the fishes. But what other options do the heart patients the world over have to combat this problem. As an alternative, the oil from them can be extracted and purified by the molecular distillation technique to rid it off its toxins.

As fish oil brings down the serum cholesterol levels, it is good for the heart patients to keep their health in check with the minimum of fuss. Moreover, fish oil is a relatively cheaper option than most other drugs prescribed for heart patients and thus is a viable option for patients of all strata of the society. Its easy availability makes it another favourite in the fight against heart diseases as it can be bought over the counter from any shop and is not confined to coastal areas only. As much as a balanced and carefully crafted diet is required by a heart patient, it is equally necessary that his/her food also includes fish oil as a supplement for a prolonged and risk free life.
